Most of you know me, but for the new readers who may not; I will just take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Vickie and I’m the lucky girl that is married to the pastor of First Congregational Church; I am also the mother of two wonderful (my opinion) children. I have the privilege of being the facilitator of the church’s ladies fellowship, and the church’s children’s outreach, where we teach the Good News Club at two schools. There is also something about me you should know, I try not to make a big deal about it, but I was born with Spina Bifida. I really don’t think of myself as disabled more like just a little inconvenienced.
It is this inconvenience that brings me to blog with you. Due to my condition I have very little use of my legs and spend quite a bit of time in a wheelchair. I would like to use this as an excuse for having put on a few more pounds then I would like or should weigh. But the truth is I like to eat. Can I have an Amen Sister from anyone else out there that likes to eat? I know that I’m not alone because McDonalds always has a line every time I go!
I have tried not to eat too much, I have tried to swim and exercise more, but I still keep carrying around the same 30 extra pounds. Finally I took it to prayer, asking God to help me find an answer. For the past year He kept putting a book in my path. A month ago our ladies group decided to have a pizza party and it was while I was with them enjoying one of my favorite activities (eating and talking) that I heard God say “ask them if they would be interested in a diet and exercise plan” so I did.
That plan is called the “Daniel Plan, 40 days to a healthier life” it is unlike any other diet you have ever heard of. Pastor Rick Warren with the help from his friends (MD’s) have developed an approach to achieving a more healthy life, by focusing on the power of God and using the five key essentials of Faith, Food, Fitness, Focus, and Friends. Fifteen thousand people in Pastor Warren’s Saddleback church lost over 260,000 pounds in their first year!
We don’t have fifteen thousand members, but I bet we have a lot of people who would like to lose a pound or two, get fit and build a closer relationship with God and each other. Starting on May 24th at 2:30 in our sanctuary, I will be hosting what I am calling “Daniel Days” for one hour we will watch the video’s that go with the Daniel plan, follow the study guide and ask God to help us on our journey to a better life. I will be blogging along the way as well, so if you are one of our snow birds that leave for the summer, or you don’t live in our area, you can still be a part of our group.
I am ready for a change, I need a change, and the Bible tells us that lasting change begins with committing your body to God. Romans 12:1 says, “…give your bodies to God… let them be a living and holy sacrifice- the kind He will find acceptable.” I know that God loves me just the way that I am, and He loves you too, but wouldn’t it be better if we treated our bodies the way God would intend for us to?
