Go, You Chicken Fat, Go!


When I was a little girl my big sister was always talking about losing weight and somewhere she got this 45 record that was called “Go, You Chicken Fat, GO!” Maybe you have heard it. I still have that song stuck in my head, and I can still see my sister jumping up and down to it, just like it was yesterday. The man singing the song was Robert Preston (The Music Man), and he sang it like he was an army drill sergeant, but just like in the Music Man you really want to join him and Go, Go, Go!

This past Wednesday in our Daniel Plan, we talked about Fitness; Sean Foy who is an exercise physiologist told us that the best fitness exercise is the one that we would actually do! So as silly as that old 45 was, it was great because it got my sister and I doing push-ups and sit-ups, and loving it. What exercise is it that you like? My favorite is swimming, and this endless rain is getting to me, but I will be hitting the water very soon! If you aren’t sure just what it is that you like to do, give a few things a try, but the most important thing is to get moving.

It may have been a while since you have done any exercise, even some deep breathing and easy stretching movements can significantly improve your health. It is hard to get yourself motivated, but in Isaiah 40:29-31 offers us some advice, “He (God) gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” The whole point of the Daniel Plan is for us to learn to lean on God for the strength we need, not to rely on our ability.

Spend some time with the Lord in prayer, and then start dreaming, dream big. What would your life look like if you increased your health, and dropped those extra pounds? Pastor Warren asked “What if you moved from thinking, I know I should exercise to I can’t wait to exercise? By integrating motion with devotion, you could grow closer and stronger in your relationship with God and reach your goals.”

Before you get your move on here are a few things that might help you get started:

  1. Schedule your activity before it happens

  2. Find a buddy to share your activity

  3. Use a journal to track your progress

As Pastor Warren said “The more you move, the better you will feel. The better you feel, the greater the likelihood that you will exercise more.” So in the words of that old song, Go, you chicken fat, go away. Go, you chicken fat, go!

A Prayer for Today

“Heavenly Father, thank You for working Your eternal glory in me. I cast my cares on You, knowing that my current situation is temporary. Thank You for Your eternal blessing on my life today and always in Jesus’ name. Amen."
