Food – Glorious – Food!

Can’t you just hear this opening song from the 1960s Broadway musical (and 1968 film) Oliver! It is sung when the workhouse boys are dreaming and fantasizing about food while going to collect their gruel from the staff of the workhouse. I have sung along with this movie many times, and I have heard it running through my head whenever I sit down to one of my mother’s big holiday meals. We are blessed to live in a time and country were we can have any type or amount of food that we would like; so it’s pretty hard for us to understand just what those boy were feeling when they sang that song.

The good news for those of us that are doing the Daniel Plan is that we don’t have to feel like we have been sent to the workhouse so we could lose a few pounds. In fact Dr. Mark Hyman wants us to know it’s alright to eat, and to eat a lot, as long as you follow a few guide lines. One, If God has made it, it’s good for you; if man processed it, it is not good for you. So eat fresh meats, produce, and whole grains. Dr. Hyman put it this way “The shorter the distance food travels from the field to your fork, the better it is for you.” The second thing is to read your food labels, so you can avoid theses 3 things “High fructose corn syrup” - “Trans fats/hydrogenated fats” - “MSG.”

Dr. Hyman also stated that if you can eliminate these things from your diet in less than 48 hours you can reset your palate. I have spent the last two weeks working on removing these things for myself and I asked the Lord to help me bind my cravings and I have already started to feel a difference in my cravings, and lost 4 pounds. My hope is that it is working for all of you as well. If you have yet to start, I challenge you to ask God for His help and then go shopping.

Here is how your plate should look on the Daniel Plan: 50 percent non-starchy veggies, 25 percent healthy animal or vegetable protein, 25 percent healthy starch or whole grains, side of low-sugar (low-glycemic) fruit, water or caffeine-free herbal teas with lemon. Please remember there is a larger reason for us to improve our health, it is written in 1 Corinthians 10:31 “So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” Our lives our bodies they are to be used to further God’s work here on earth. Jesus died so that you and I could have life and have it more abundantly, we need to care for this temple our bodies, so as we honor the life that God has given us others will know it has been for and because of Him.

“Dear Father, You created our bodies, help us to always remember to nourish them the way You want us to, and help us follow Your health plan for Your glory. In Jesus’name. Amen”
