You Gotta Have Friends!
There is an old song that I grew up singing, you may remember it. It is called "Friends" a 1973 hit single by Bette Midler. The chorus “Cause you got to have friends” speaks to all of us. Friends are a true gift from God, the first thing that God said to mankind in Genesis 2:18 was, “It is not good for the man to be alone” We are designed by God to need relationships. Our friends, family, and church family are very important to us, and just like one of the verses in Bette Midler’s song says “But you got to have friends the feelings so strong. You got to have friends to make the day last long.”
One part of the Daniel Plan states that “Lasting change requires honest community.” We were talking last time about how hard it is for us to make changes. In fact some of our habits are so deeply ingrained in our everyday life that we would never be able to uproot them on our own. That is why we must team-tackle them. Pastor Warren goes on to say “the deepest changes in your life will only happen as you open up to a few trusted friends.”
As I told you all before I was born with a birth defect, but my parents knew that I would need to learn how to make and keep friends if I was going to have a full life. So I was sent off to school. Not to school for challenged kids, but the local elementary in our neighborhood. It was there on the battlefield of the playground that I learned the value of a few trusted friends. And over the years friends have played a large roll in my development. From them I learned that my value didn’t depend on how fast I was, (a good thing) because sure wasn’t! That if I wanted to dance, I should, even if it didn’t look like everyone else; and why not be a mother, even if I couldn’t carry them in my own body. I know that those trusted friends helped me become the women that is strong and confident and writing these things to you.
Now I am turning to all of you for help again, this time to make the changes that I need to make, to become a healthier me; and I intend to be that friend for all of you as well. Pastor Warren shared some statistics about what happened at his church when they decided to do the Daniel Plan together, 12,000 people lost more than 250,000 pounds, and he discovered that those who connected in a small group lost twice as much as those who tried to do the program on their own. One of our members here at F.C.C has purchased her own copy of Pastor Warren’s complete plan, the same one we will be using and has taken it with her up north. Her plan is to stay in touch with us through this blog and also to get her family and northern church involved, and I can’t wait to hear from her!
The Bible is filled with verses on the importance of community such as Galatians 6:2 says “By helping each other with your troubles, you truly obey the law of Christ” and Hebrews 10:25 says “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another.” I know that where two or three are gathered so our Lord will be also, and I am counting on it!
No matter how many of us meet this Wednesday at 2:30 we will pray and encourage each other and God will be there with us to supply what we cannot do alone. Please make the commitment to come and add your trustworthy friendship to our group.
Because if you do you will benefit more than you will give!
A Prayer for Today
"Father, we come humbly to You. To give You our past disappointments, our brokenness. Fill us with Your hope and expectation as You fulfill the dreams and desires that You have placed within us in Jesus’ name. Amen."
