Do You Own Your Body?

Yesterday I asked you all to get plugged in and today I want to ask you a question. Who owns your body? Our society tells us that we own our bodies and they even have a class they teach at my children’s elementary school that tells them the same thing. But what does God say about our bodies? To hear from God all you need to do is look in your Bible, as Pastor Rick Warren stated in chapter one of the companion book to the Daniel Plan, you need to read 1 Corinthians 6:12-20. I am not going to post all of it here but I do want to focus on a few of the most important parts. My youth Bible starts right out in verse 12 with “I am allowed to do anything”- but not everything is good for you. And even though “I am allowed to do anything,” I must not become a slave to anything."

Wow, somethings jump right out at me, my children know the word allow, it’s a very important word to them. They know that allow is a privilege word; they can’t do what they want unless their father or I allow it. God gave Adam and Eve this beautiful world He created, and all of it was theirs to enjoy. Including all the food they could eat. Of course that came with a warning not to eat one particular food; because “not everything is good for you” we all know how that turned out. I think right then is when men and women started having a love hate relationship with food!

When I was young I had a lot of trouble with my kidneys and had chronic bladder infections, to fight this I was on antibiotics daily, those pills were my enemy and friend. Without them I would have died, with them nothing tasted good. My family would beg, plead, and force me to eat; nothing was off limits I could have anything I wanted. But because I wanted nothing I stayed thin. Then at the end of high school the doctors came up with a better plan and from then on I didn’t need to take pills! It took a few years but as the drugs left my body I found that things began to taste good, not just good but fantastic!

Now I sit here today a “slave to food” with the prior training that nothing was off limits, “I am allowed to do anything” I have become over weight. I can’t blame my family for my current situation, any more than I could blame God for making food that tastes so good! It was just as my favorite motivational speaker Zig Ziglar said “For 24 years of my adult life, by choice I weighed well over 200 lbs. I say by choice because you see I have never accidentally eaten anything.” Like him I have made the choice to eat the wrong things, and ate too much of what is good for me.

But back to my question, the answer is, “My body belongs to God.” So does yours. It is His property, He made it and He paid for it! Jesus paid for my body when he died for me on the cross. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says “…your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God…you do not belong to yourself,” “For God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body.” If you have decided to lay down your life and follow Jesus, your body is now the dwelling place of God. Would you go into church and throw trash all over the altar, would you use the choir loft as a bathroom? Those are pretty extreme examples, but you need to see that is how God must feel every time we chose to hurt our bodies. Pastor Warren said it best “God loves you, He stretched out his arms and was nailed to the cross, saying this is how much I love you, you are priceless, I would rather die than live without you.”

It is time for me to step up and take back my health and know that just because I can eat anything I desire, it does not mean that I should! As we are preparing to take this journey on May 24th start today to take better care of your body, remembering that it is just a loaner and the only one we will get here on earth. Make the best of your life and it will give you the best life you could ever dream of!

See you here tomorrow!

A Prayer for Today

"Father in heaven, today I call on You—the Great I Am. I surrender myself to You—spirit, soul and body. I ask that You direct my steps and supply every one of my needs as I move forward in obedience to Your Word in Jesus’ name. Amen."
